geese + haunting

today I sat by the quinobequin1 river (aka the charles2) for a while at magazine beach.3 i sat in a plastic adirondack chair, plenty of feathers on the ground, wondering whose they were. then the geese approached, gliding across the water, case cracked.

their beady lil eyes peering at me, me peering at them. in this class i took last summer,4 which talked a lot about bird watching (lol), i learned that our magnetic frequency/energy extends 15 feet above us, and 10 feet around us at least. in other words, birds can catch the vibe.

later, i watched the geese remove feathers from their coats, grooming and splashing. their big old wing spans. it reminded me of this song I’ve had on repeat all week,

what you do not need, you must leave it be hind you

what you do not need, you must leave it behind you

what you do not need, you must leave it behind you

what you do not need, you must leave it behind you

people do not have feathers, and skin cells/hair follices somehow aren’t as compelling to me. but if you know me you know i love to get rid of shit, a trip to good will/Salvation Army - get it out of my sight. make room.

yet so much lingers. Lama Rod Owens describes mindfulness as a willingness to be haunted5, which i think about all the time.  even as I let go, of material things, swiftly, so much stays, so much is here.6 and what is possible when i can be with it? what is possible when/if i’m willing?

  1. means ‘meandering’

  2. The name Charles is derived from the Old English word “ceorl,” meaning “free man.” The word “ceorl” was used to distinguish a free person from a bondsman or slave (“thew”) and a noble person (“eorl”).

  3. which is called magazine beach because there’s a building here that used to store gunpowder.
