somehow monday is already here. and here i am living in the somehow.

yesterday i biked from brooklyn to the upper west side, and for part of the way i listened to adrienne maree brown interview prentis hemphill about their new book on their podcast Becoming the People.

towards the end, they talked about the distinction between spirituality and religion, how spirituality requires a willingness to go inwards, to offer attention to your own spirit and choices. hemphill talked about how we usually associate the bible verse “the body is a temple” with health, what we eat, how we take care of ourselves, who we associate with; it’s come to be associated with purity and a depoliticized wellness.

they then offered another interpretation, that the body is the first place, one of the primary places where we access the sacred, it is a place where we can connect to the infinite. this struck me, and was much more resonant than the ‘yoga / green juice / control’ interpretation.

temple also refers to the zone between our eyes and ears….maybe it’s that place where we listen some other kind of way, where we pick up on the vibrations that evade the normal, rote, stale channels.

so far this / some body has a lot to communicate. may we be gentle with the ones we’ve got.
